If Sunday elections don’t succeed, government can try, try again

Ballots are going undelivered, election officials are resigning and protesters are vowing to stop anyone from voting on Sunday.

Sound like a recipe for electoral success? Well, don’t worry, if the elections fail to produce definitive results, we can just do it all over again, according to a government official.

Any area that is unable to hold a clean and fair poll Sunday can schedule another round, according to Deputy Prime Minister Pongthep Thepkanchana.

Although another royal decree would be necessary, there’s nothing in the law requiring the election be limited to one day, he said.

On Facebook, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra called for all Thais to participate in Sunday’s election, MCOT reported.
