They can take your time and dignity, but starting next month, Thai traffic cops can no longer take your driver’s license.

New traffic regulations forbid officers from taking motorists’ licenses and require they mail parking tickets to the vehicle owner’s registered address, according to a bulletin distributed to police Monday.

While plans to replace driver’s licenses with electronic versions seem to have stalled, it will be acceptable to carry a photocopy or a new electronic version of your driver’s license.

How to obtain a new electronic version of your driver’s license? Thought you’d never ask!

Drivers must download the free DLT QR Licence smartphone application (iOS and region-locked Android Play Store). Use it to register your ID number and email (app is in Thai but passports are acceptable forms of ID). Use a code sent via the registered email to log in, set a six-digit password and, finally, scan the QR code on the back of your physical driver’s license.

Now you’re all set!

The changes are part of revised traffic laws approved earlier this year.
