Holiday transportation guide: Late night BTS, free tolls, trains, buses

Holidays are always a great time to break free of the concrete jungle.

Those looking forward to escaping Bangkok to travel or visit their hometowns during the holidays could save a few hundred baht because local transit agencies are in the spirit of giving.

Here are some of the gifts sitting under the transport tree:

Highways: Starting at 4pm on Dec. 27, the Route 7 (Bangkok-Chonburi) and 9 (Outer Ring Road) motorways will operate toll-free. The Bang Na Expressway gets an earlier start at 1am on Dec. 27. These routes will not require tolls until Jan. 3.

BTS: Closing time extended to 2am on New Year’s Eve.

Rail: The following train routes will offer free fares for limited passengers: Bangkok-Sila At (Uttaradit province), Bangkok-Sungai Kolok (Narathiwat province), Bangkok-Ubon Ratchathani and Bangkok-Udon Thani.

Shuttles: Buses shuttling passengers between the Mo Chit Northern Bus Terminal in Chatuchak, BTS Mochit and Victory Monument.
