Two weeks after an exploding blender started a fire that destroyed the homes of 25 families in Bangkok’s Khlong Toei community, people are rallying to help them rebuild.
Furniture, clothing and other necessities can be donated at several spots, including Artbox in Soi Sukhumvit 10, thanks to an online community with a mission to serve Bangkok families most in need of help.
“Shampoo is a [godsend]. Toothpaste is awesome…everything you would need if you were rebuilding your house that was destroyed,” Greg Lange, the Sunrise Tacos founder who’s been organizing community service around Bangkok for four months, wrote in a message. “[People in the community are] very sweet and very appreciative.”
Since the July 21 fire destroyed nine homes, Lange and his friends have donated beds and sofas. Last weekend they went to help clean up and provide food. Help is still needed and, as he said, the more good hearts, the merrier.
The fire began in a building holding goods for recycling and damaged at least seven other residences in addition to those destroyed. At least 60 people were said to be displaced. The military will send personnel to help rebuild the homes in the coming week, so even leftover building materials were being sought.
Clothing can be donated at Mexican restaurant Margarita Storm inside the Artbox Night Market. During the day, Sunrise Tacos office will also accept clothes and small furniture. The office is also located in Soi Sukhumvit 10 next to the Galleria 10 Bangkok Hotel.
