Hell or high water: Rains, flooding cause traffic misery in Bangkok

Bangkok traffic came to a standstill after heavy rains and flooding hit most of the capital and nearby provinces early this morning.

Worst affected was Bang Na, where the rain levels measured 67.5mm, according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

Several roads were flooded, including a 200-meter section on Sukhuhmvit from Soi 71 to Soi Bearing, Rama IV near Khlong Toey market, Ladprao-Wanghin Road and Srinakarin Road, Thai PBS reported.

Uprooted trees and floods blocked traffic on many roads, and traffic police reported standstill traffic and road accidents.

There were traffic jams on Srinakharin road from Samut Prakarn to Bangkok, New Road from Thanon Tok to  Chan Road, the Uttaraphimuk elevated tollway (or Don Mueang tollway), Phaholyothin Road from Bang Khen to Bang Bua Thong to Kaset intersection, Ratprarop from Pratunam to Makkasan, Ratchadapisek from Ratchayothin to Ratchada-Ladprao, and Rama III.

Meanwhile several schools in Samut Prakarn closed due to the floods, including Assumption Samut Prakarn.
