Health Ministry to come up with measures for ambulances

After a recent ambulance accident killed a patient in labor and a senior nurse in Krabi province, the Ministry of Health has appointed a committee to discuss improved safety measures for ambulances and the drivers.

To ensure safety to patients and hospital staff, Dr. Wachira Pengchan of the health ministry said  Friday the government will study the following standards:

1. Special ambulance driver’s license – Drivers will be required to receive special training and take a drug test before their shift and an annual psychological test.

2. Speed limit – Drivers cannot drive faster than 90 kilometers per hour

3. Paramedics – Paramedics selected to accompany patients in the ambulance must be specialized and able to cope with the patients’ conditions.

4. Vehicles – Ambulances used in transporting patients must be in a good condition.

5. Equipments – GPS and control monitor must be provided in the ambulance for tracking.

6. Traffic – The other vehicles on the road must make way for an ambulance.

7. Patient referral must be done at the right time/stage of patient’s disease.
