Happy Asanha Bucha Day from Coconuts Bangkok.
This auspicious day, held on the full moon of the eighth lunar month, commemorates the Buddha’s first sermon in which he explained to five disciples the doctrine that came to him during enlightenment.
The sermon, which is referred to as “setting in motion the wheel of the dhamma,” laid out the four noble truths that are the foundation of Buddhism:
-
All life is suffering (dukka)
-
Suffering is caused by craving (tanha)
-
There is a state (nirvana) beyond suffering and craving
-
The way to nirvana is via the eightfold path
Asanha Bucha day is one of the most holy days in Theravada Buddhism and is celebrated by donating offerings to temples in Thailand.
The four noble truths remain the unifying pillar of all schools of Buddhism, despite their various differences.
