How did you get into DJ-ing?
To my mom’s greatest despair; I have always enjoyed playing loud hiphop in my bedroom. I was also trafficking a bit with my friend’s Technics Mk2 turntables back in France. But I only really got into DJing in Bangkok in 2005 thanks to legendary nights at Astra, the back-in-the-days Café Democ and the good old Jazzbah records shop. Missing those days!
These days, I play a bit of ’90s old school hiphop but I am just in love with drum ‘n’ bass to be honest! I like to span its full range, from the more liquid, soulful or funky Hospital label sounds and also harder stuff from Critical or Shogun Records. But my favorite remains the deep minimal sounds of Soul:R records, especially from Marcus Intalex or Calibre.
Describe the music you play in five words.

What’s the most fun you’ve ever had at a gig? Give us all the ugly details.
It might have been last Saturday’s Phaftunk On The Boat party. The crowd was amazing and the vibe immense right from the start. We had great MCs and dope DJs building the night from reggae to hiphop, house, garage and eventually drum ‘n’ bass. We had lots of intoxicated pirates and people jumping in front the decks as well as inside the DJ booth area. We even had drunken DJ Swindle doing a running jump from the leaving boat and landing mere millimeters from the edge of the docks! It’s a wonder no one got hurt. A truly epic night! Big ups to the Bangkok Boat Party crew for putting such an event together.
What’s your favorite venue to play in Bangkok? Why?
I really enjoy playing at Glow Nightclub where we have our monthly Phatfunk residency. People who come to Phatfunk are just out to have fun and listen to drum ‘n’ bass. They dance like crazy all night long and they really interact with the DJs. It’s a real pleasure to be playing for such a high energy crowd. I remember lots of very late nights with guests invading the DJ booth and jumping alongside with the DJs during the last few songs. Such a wicked vibe!

Which track are you most excited about right now?
“Down Somehow” by Random Movement

Trap music: yea or nay?
Yeah, a bit of trap music is always cool but not too cheesy and definitely not all night. I think it works particularly well to drop one or two trap tunes in the middle of a drum ‘n’ bass to change the rhythm and keep things interesting. I remember DJ Friction dropping Higher Ground from Hudson Mohawke and Lunice in the middle of his d&B set. People went nuts.

What’s one song you will never, ever play?
Probably most 50 Cent songs.
What’s the best way for someone to get you to play their request?
Well, it’s gotta be drum ‘n’ bass if you want to stand any chance. But honestly speaking, I don’t really like entertaining requests. Let the DJs take you on a musical journey and surprise you.
What shows/residencies do you have lined up?
DJ Delorean from Phatfunk and myself have just started a new deep liquid and minimal drum ‘n’ bass weekly night called Kontraband and we have got Lenzman (Metalheadz Records), one of the world’s best drum ‘n’ bass artists to bless our official launch party this Thursday. It’s at Grease Club on Sukhumvit 49 from 10pm until very late with FREE entry and special drink promotions. If you know your drum ‘n’ bass, you can’t miss Lenzman!
