A 15-hour standoff ended early this morning with police killing a resident who had gunned down at least three people in a shooting rampage in Phetchaburi province.

Police early Thursday morning shot and killed 29-year-old Anuwat Waenthong at the residence where he had earlier shot two university students and a motorcycle delivery rider to death.

Three other people were also wounded by gunfire. Kanoksak Mutthakarn, sub-district chief, went to the scene to talk Anuwat down but was shot and taken to a hospital. He was in stable condition.

Police were first alerted at around 2pm Wednesday that Anuwat was shooting a weapon in his home. They arrived to find the body of a delivery rider outside the home. The two students were later found inside.

Police cordoned off the area and evacuated about 40 children and their teachers from nearby schools.

Anuwat had been due in court Wednesday on drug-related charges. He did not show up at the hearing, and later in the day began shooting.

Police defended killing Anuwat, saying negotiations had failed and he continued to fire upon police to evade capture, according to Lt. Gen. Thanayut Wutticharasthamrong, commander of the Provincial Police Region 7.

During the standoff, Anuwat’s mother went to the site to appeal for her son to turn himself in.
