Guests usually get a thank you note from a newly-wedded couple after the event, but this woman said the bride and groom sent her a hurtful note calling her out for putting too little money in the envelope for her cash gift.
This story, which received attention on Facebook, comes from the wedding guest who posted a photo of the sarcastic note she received from the bitchy bride, condemning her for only giving them THB200 cash for the wedding.
The note actually said, “Thank you so much. If you are really that broke, just tell me. I return it to you here as a gift for your new job.”
The guest, whose name was not mentioned, wrote: “I don’t understand. I helped out with the wedding since 8am. I’ve spent my money on my dress and transportation, and THB200 is what I had left for the gift. It offended them so much that they had to give it back.”
“The bride said that the minimum other guests gave them was THB500. That’s what people in the countryside do. It’s etiquette. She told me to take my money back and that maybe I would be able to feed myself for a few days! I’m sorry that I get a small salary.”
It is reported that the newly-wedded couple has unfriended this unfortunate guest on Facebook, according to Khaosod.
Comments expressed shock and compassion for the woman. Some suggested that people hold a big wedding just so they can collect money from the guests.
It is etiquette at a Thai wedding reception that a guest must give money to the bride and groom. A box collecting cash envelopes is commonly placed by the guestbook. People tend to put a minimum of THB500 in the envelope, depending on how luxurious the reception is and the relationship between the guest and the couple.
