Grammar police: Thai media urged to use correct Thai

The social media trend among Thais of turning “krab” into “krush” and “jung loei” into “Joong Bei” makes the language sound idiotic, and a Thai language expert has urged mass media to use correct Thai grammar to help fix the problem.

In the seminar, “Modern media and their Thai usage”, yesterday, former member of the Royal Society and Thai language expert Professor Kanchana Naksakul criticized the Thai media for its poor spelling and pronunciation, and said this will trickle down to Thai youth.

She noted that youngsters are susceptible to influences from the media.

Another language expert, Danai Chanchaochai, said more and more people use social media and a lot don’t use correct Thai.

Or maybe they do, they just got auto-corrected.

Danai urged the media to be mindful when using Thai in their news stories, state media reported.
