GrabCar has recently introduced the “extra stop” button, so you’ll have to make a proper booking and pay an extra fee if you want to drop your friends off on the way.

With the introduction of the new function, the ride sharing app announced on its website that passengers cannot spontaneously ask their drivers to add another destination or stop on the way.

GrabCar allows up to two stops per ride, and the fares will be calculated based on distance. Once you make a booking, stops cannot be switched or changed.

Can you make your driver wait at the stop? A 5 minute grace period is actually allowed. If you require a longer waiting time, there is a THB20 surcharge for every 5 minutes the driver waits.

The function is only available with GrabCar, not GrabTaxi.

So how much more do you have to pay to drop off a friend? We experimented by adding an extra stop at Siam Square One on a ride from Amarin Plaza to MBK.

Although our driver wouldn’t need to change directions to make a quick stop at Siam Square One, our fare was increased by THB28.

The app quoted a THB80 fare for a ride from Amarin Plaza to MBK, and the fare increased to THB108 when a stop at Siam Square One was added.

Of course, you want to be fair to the driver. So consider this a mandatory tip.
