Govt payment system hacked, Digital Minister to work with opponents of Computer Crime Act

After the government’s online payment system was attacked by hacker-opponents of the new Computer Crime Act on Tuesday afternoon, the Minister of Digital Economy and Society has announced that he is ready to work with the opponents.

Apparently, the hackers were successful in causing the payment system to fail. The system is used to send funds from the government and for payment on government bidding projects, reported Khaosod English.

The Ministry has not said that it will work toward revising the act, but that they will work with the opponents to come to a better understanding of the law. The opponents have voiced their request that PM Prayuth Chan-Ocha invoke Article 44 of the interim constitution and repeal the law completely.

Digital Economy and Society Minister Pichet Darongkaveroj said that Thai citizens who misunderstand the new Computer Crime Act may be just 5-10 percent of the population but may cause large problems, reported Thai PBS.

The Ministry’s Deputy Permanent Secretary, Somsak Khaosuwan, announced that officers have already arrested several young people who have been involved in the hacking, and subsequent failing, of more than one government website this week.

Somsak said that the youths would not be prosecuted but, instead, be forced to complete the junta’s “attitude adjustment” course in order to better understand the new Computer Crime Act.
