Government extends scholarship program for poor families

The Thai government has decided to extend a scholarship scheme for Mathayorn 6 students from poor families.

The program bears similarities to the One District One (Odos) scholarship proffered by the Thaksin Shinawatra regime, but changes the distribution of the scholarship awards.

According to the new scheme, 1,856 grants will be offered to impoverished students with stellar academic records. The grants will be awarded to two students from each district whose families have an annual income of THB200,000 or less.

Those who receive the scholarships will be able to study abroad in one of 35 non-English speaking countries approved by the Education Ministry. The Bangkok Post reports that students can study in English-speaking countries only if they pursue study in areas that want for qualified specialists.
