The parents of a 7-year-old girl found dead in a school van were preparing her funeral today after an autopsy confirmed she died due to heatstroke and not foul play.

A week after second-grader Khemnit “Ji Hoon” Thongyu was found dead in a school van at a school in Chonburi province’s Phanthong district, a forensic examination concluded that she indeed died of heatstroke.

One of the members of the forensic team, Sarawut Rachasrimuang, said that heatstroke in a sleeping child could result in brain damage, convulsions, seizures, and organ failure. Fatal accidents are more severe in children than that of adults.

Ji Hoon’s parents initially believed she was murdered but said they were convinced by the forensic team’s explanation.

The family is expected to take her tomorrow to Wat Ban Kao.

Her body was found one week ago in a van hours after its driver dropped children off at school.
