Girl, 10, survives electric shock at Phuket viewpoint

A 10-year-old girl was hospitalized after getting an electric shock at the tourist vantage point on Phuket hill yesterday, prompting officials to investigate.

City workers were sent to the site to ensure safety after a girl, 10, went into convulsions and collapsed after gripping the safety rail while with her family.

“We had no idea what happened. We couldn’t find a pulse and rushed her to Vachira Phuket Hospital,” said her father Somrit, whose last name is withheld.

Somrit said he took his wife and two children, 10 and 6, to the hilltop to enjoy the view of the city and take pictures.

His daughter is now fine, but still under observation, he added.

City workers identified the source of the electric shock as a loose power supply connection at the base of a lamp beside the safety rail. The electrical box had been damaged.

“Maybe someone kicked the base and damaged the electrical box at the base of the lamp post,” one official speculated. A worker sealed the lamp connector box.
