German tourist drowns after getting caught up in rough waves off Koh Phangan

A German man died yesterday after getting caught up in 2-meter-high strong waves off a beach in Koh Phangan.

The unidentified tourist, 46, reportedly ignored a rough seas warning on Thong Nai Pan Noi Beach, Khaosod English reported.

His wife said she heard him shouting for help after he went for a swim in the sea, and tried to help him along with hostel staff.

They were unable to rescue the man, who was unconscious when he was eventually pulled from the waves.

Rescue workers gave the man CPR, but when he was sent to hospital he was pronounced dead.

Koh Phangan police said there had been red flags put up on the beach to warn swimmers of the dangerous currents.
