More information has surfaced about the improbable flight of German criminal Carlo Konstantin Kohl, who escaped from his handlers earlier this week while in Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport.
Kohl had originally been picked up in Australia, where he was arrested under a variety of charges, which included (but where not limited to) drug possession and theft. He arrived in Bangkok while en route to Germany, where he was to face criminal charges.
For this trip, Kohl had been outfitted with a two-man escort from the private security firm Serco. Surveillance footage revealed that both of these men were asleep while Kohl first wandered about the airport, then disabled the alarm on an emergency exit and snuck out into greater Bangkok. Kohl remains at large, though authorities believe he might be hiding out in one of Bangkok’s numerous red light districts.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Thai authorities waited eight days before alerting the Australian government about Kohl’s escape. To the great embarrassment of law enforcement agencies in both nations, Kohl’s whereabouts are currently unknown, though the Royal Thai Police have offered a reward for his capture.
