A French man and his mother spent four months walking from Phuket to the southernmost district of Thailand after he was inspired by the journey of Luffy, the main character in popular manga “One Piece.”
Columbus, 26, and his mother Dominique, 65, whose last names were not mentioned, finally reached the Betong district of Yala on Friday, after walking 700 kilometers from the tourist island. Upon their arrival, they were approached by Betong rescue volunteers who offered them help, according to the Public Relations Department of Betong district.
Columbus said he was inspired by One Piece — a manga which tells the story of Luffy, a pirate who travels across the globe. But instead of sailing the world with a unique crew, Columbus walks across different countries with his mother while sporting a signature straw hat and red shirt like his favorite anime character.
Columbus said the journey has been great exercise and he has lost more than 10 kilograms from walking.
His mom said they had to walk through Krabi, Trang and Songkhla to get to Yala. They have been sleeping in public pavilions along the street or setting up their tents when it gets dark.
Dominique said that Thai people have been helpful to them by offering them food and drinks.
After completing their journey from the South, the mother and son would like to travel in the North of Thailand.
They have traveled, and walked, in many countries including Japan, Australia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and Myanmar.
At least, these two seem to have things sorted out. Not like the Russian woman that police had to talk out of walking from Koh Chang to Bangkok because she didn’t have money for bus fare.
