Four men, four shovels fall victim to legendary war gold fever

The latest search for hidden Japanese gold ended after police found a group of men tunneling furiously into a mountain in Kanchanaburi province.

Police arrested four workers with electric drilling equipment and four shovels who said they’d spent that past month digging into the mountain near Vajiralongkorn Lake at the behest of an unidentified businessman who contracted their services.

Ever since World War II, legends persist of hidden caches of gold bullion looted by Japanese forces being buried in Southeast Asia. Typically those tales place “Yamashita’s gold” somewhere in the Philipinnes, but a Thai version endures as well.

The men said they were paid THB350 per day to search for the treasure, not a trace of which has been found, Khaosod reported.
