The US Senate today approved the appointment of former envoy to North Korea Glyn Davies as the new ambassador to Thailand.
Glyn Davies is a career member of the US foreign service and is now a senior adviser in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the Department of State. He previously spent two years as a special envoy to North Korea in 2012-2014 before being nominated to represent the United States in April.
Thailand has not had an official ambassador for 10 months since Kristie Kenney, who was known for her colorful personality, left her post in November 2014 and returned to Washington DC to work at the state department.
US charge d’affaires W Patrick Murphy announced the approval of Davies this morning in a tweet.
It hasn’t been stated when Davies will arrive in Bangkok, but he will have to deal with tense relations between the US and Thailand after the Obama administration criticised the military regime after the coup.
Davies tweeted to confirm the story this morning, adding he is looking forward to moving to Bangkok.
