Former Bangkok police chief arrested with gun at Japanese airport

A former Bangkok police chief was taken into custody at Japan’s Narita International Airport for trying to carry a gun onto a flight, a police spokesman said yesterday.

Police Lt. Gen. Kamronwit Thoopkrachang, who had traveled to Japan on Thursday, was detained on Monday by police after a handgun and ammunition were discovered in his carry-on bag.

The former police commisioner admitted to owning the gun but said he did not know it was in his bag.

Questions were immediately raised about how he could have flown out of Thailand with the weapon. Kamronwit flew out of Suvarnabhumi airport on a Thai Airways flight. Passengers carrying guns onto planes is not an encouraging sign for Thailand’s aviation sector which is trying to address international concerns about its safety standards.

The police have offered legal assistance to Kamronwit, ThaiPBS reported.
