Eerie footage going viral in Thailand this week purportedly shows a mysterious creature hopping in a field. The oddity was identified by the video’s owner as a “Gong Goi,” a type of Thai ghost.

The video was shared by Facebook user Chantha Sitouluk, who claimed to have captured the Gong Goi ghost on camera near Luang Namtha Province in Laos.

When contacted by Coconuts Bangkok, Chantha refused to provide more details about the video but insisted that he took it himself and that it is 100 percent a genuine Gong Goi.

So what exactly is a Gong Goi? It is a type of ghost appearing Thai and Lao mythology. In Thailand, Gong Goi are believed to come from the Northeast and are described as child-sized monster that lives in the jungle. They has one leg and therefore hops around while screaming, “Gong Goi! Gong Goi!”

No one knows exactly why they do that, but they are said to sometimes visit people camping in the wild.

Please refer to Coconuts Bangkok’s Thai Ghost Guide for an accurate depiction of Gong Goi.

Asst. Prof. Jessada Denduangboripant, a scientist from Chulalongkorn University who loves commenting on “paranormal” footage, told Amarin TV that there’s nothing particularly unusual or supernatural about how the creature in the video moves — actually, it looks like a regular person hopping around.

He assumes that it’s just a person in a white cloth and wig. Sounds about right to us.
