Never made it home Wednesday night or to work this morning? Hours of torrential rain left Bangkok scrambling for higher ground as some of the worst flooding in years paralzyed the capital.
A constant, heavy downpour that began Wednesday evening and fell without pause into the morning triggered flash floods, turned major roads into rivers, and snarled several areas across the metropolitan area.
Much of Sukhumvit Road downtown was underwater, leaving motorists trapped in disabled cars or limping through traffic for hours.
Commuters shared their misery under #floods by posting images and videos of themselves wading through floodwater last night and this morning. Many complained they could not find motorbikes for hire or taxis.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration reported flooding at 26 locations Wednesday, about a dozen of which were still under water this morning.
Some of the most affected roads include Sukhumvit, Rama IV, Asoke-Montri, Ramkhamhaeng, and Ratchada. The highest flooding was 27 centimeters at the Sri Udom intersection on Chalerm Prakiat Rama IX Road.
The highest rainfall was recorded in Min Buri district at 165mm; the Khlong Toei district saw 145mm.
People still faced difficulty getting to work Thursday morning.
Due to the floods, Ramkhamhaeng University canceled classes on both ita campuses at Hua Mak and Bang Na.
Given the high water levels in the canals, operators of San Saeb Canal ferries suspended the service until noon today.
Thunderstorms will continue across the capital today before falling off over the weekend.
