Smoke plumes and forest fires were still visible this morning as firefighters fought to control a fire that wreathed a mountain in flames northeast of the capital in Nakhon Nayok province.
More helicopters and firefighters were on their way and due to arrive this afternoon to help extinguish the forest fire which had much of Khao Laem resembling a volcano last night. Workers have erected fire breaks to prevent the flames from spreading further into residential areas, according to Bancha Chaowarin, provincial governor.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, but local authorities said they believe it was not caused by human activity. They suspect lightning that struck the area a few times Wednesday night prior to the fire.
