The Fine Arts Department displays design of royal funeral pyre

The design for the royal funeral pyre for the late king was displayed for the first time yesterday by the Fine Arts Department.

The pyre design is a traditional one similar to those used since the Rattanakosin era. They pyre also features images of Mount Sumeru, a mythological mountain where the spirits of Thai kings supposedly go after death.

The pyre design boasts a seven-tier roof and spire to be erected at Sanam Luang. It will stand just over 50 meters high, reported Thai PBS.

The design will also include a pavilion that can hold 2,800 people and outlying areas that can hold 7,400 more people.

Satawan Homsai, architectural director at the Fine Arts Department, is the designer for the project; Korkiat Thongpud is the engineer; and Thirachart Veerayuththanont is the architect.

The royal coffin, crafted of sandalwood, has already been made while the carriages to be used in the funeral are being repaired.

On December 19, a ceremony will be held at Sanam Luang as the first foundation stone is placed in the ground. Construction should begin in January 2017 and be completed in September 2017.
