Field Trip: Monks watch monk movie at Major Pinklao (PHOTOS)

A unique audience of hundreds of monks and novices from different temples around Bangkok gathered at Major Cineplex Pinklao to watch a movie about a monk.

Director Somkiat Ruenpraphat proudly shared Friday photos of the crowd of monks watching his movie “Kruato,” an adaptation of the life of Somdej Toh, one of the most famous Buddhist monks who lived in Thailand in the 19th century.

The photos caused some debate online whether it’s appropriate for Buddhists monks to watch a movie, as one of the precepts clearly states entertainment is strictly prohibited for them. No precepts specifically address biopic edu-tainment.

Some said their intention to learn a bit more about Buddhism is good, they could probably do so more effectively at a temple instead of a movie theater.
