What’s worse than sitting in stalled traffic for a few satang per minute? Going all day without fares and earning nothing because many major roads are shut down.
That’s the chief complaint of taxi drivers who are calling for an end to the protests which have at times caused havoc on road traffic in Bangkok.
On Friday a group of taxi drivers lined up their colorful rides in front of the Royal Thai Police headquarters to petition Police Gen. Adul Saengsinkaew to feel their pain.
Condemning the planned “shutdown” of the Thai capital next week by the People′s Committee for Absolute Democracy With the King As Head of State, the drivers said many are facing serious economic hardship.
Driver Sanong On-Anong, 40, said the continuing protests have destroyed his income and put his family in financial jeopardy. He also expressed dismay about a driver who was severely beaten by protesters who had taken over Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road and asked the police to arrest chief protester Suthep Thaugsuban, Khaosod reported.
