Bangkok can be described as many things but a pious hub of devout Christianity is probably not one of them. Yet, in spite of the debauchery associated with tourist hotspots like Nana and Patpong, the “City of Angels” does in fact offer a robust helping of Church services year round. And this is particularly relevant as the Christian world faces down one of the holiest of weekends on the calendar this weekend.
So whether you’re a devout Catholic who never misses a Sunday mass or you’re simply looking for a solid Easter egg hunt to preoccupy the kids, you’ve come to the right place. Listed below is our comprehensive compilation of Easter activities throughout the Bangkok area.
Good Friday and Sunday Mass:
The Evangelical Church of Bangkok (ECB) will be holding both a Good Friday Service at 7:30pm as well as the traditional Sunday Mass running from 9:00 – 11:15am. Childcare will be provided at both gatherings. As an additional plus for all interested families, the ECB is helping put on a CrossTown Easter egg hunt on Saturday morning. The hunt will commence at 10am at Chuvit Park. Prizes, refreshments and a range of activities will be available for all comers.
The International Church of Bangkok is to hold a Friday service at the Christian Guest House at 7pm. Get there early on Sunday to decorate the Cross from 9:30am and stay for traditional morning worship at 10am. The ceremony will be followed by an Easter egg hunt. If you can’t make it in the morning, stop by around 6:30pm for a contemporary Easter evening celebration.
Assumption Cathedral in Bangkok will be quite busy throughout the weekend. Starting on Good Friday, there will be a Way of the Cross ceremony in English at 1pm and one in Thai at 2pm. A Veneration of the Cross will occur at 3pm.
Saturday night shall feature an Easter Vigil Mass at 7pm and on Sunday there will be several services. At 7am, 8am and 5pm there is to be Thai language Mass. An English language Easter Mass will occur at 10am. English language booklets will be available at the Thai services as well.
Christ Church Bangkok will host an Hour at the Cross of readings and reflections at noon on Friday followed by a 7pm Remembrance of the Cross featuring spoken words and worship. On Sunday there will be an early morning Holy Communion service at 7:30am and an all-age Easter celebration at 10am.
