FDA to host massive drug bonfire in Ayutthaya

From a yaba bust in early 2013

On June 26, the Food and Drug Administration will host its 42nd annual drug bonfire, in which it will torch 3.4 tons of seized narcotics.

The numbers on this one are pretty staggering. Fuel for this year’s pyre will include 31 million yaba tablets, 298 kilograms of methamphetamines and 125 kilograms of heroin.

This year’s drug burn is significantly larger than last year’s. If you’re an optimist, you can say this owes to better enforcement, whereas if you’re a pessimist, you can say that it’s attributable simply to larger amounts of elicit substance finding its way into the Kingdom.

In either case, the Nation reports that this year’s haul dwarfs its 2012 predecessor, which stood at only 2.7 tons.
