Fatness, politics, and weeping: This year’s scandalicious Miss Thailand Universe

The newest Miss Thailand Universe is being excoriated online for her weight. Real mature guys!

Many are saying on online forums that 22-year-old Weluree “Fai” Disayabut, who was crowned Miss Thailand Universe 2014 last Saturday, is too fat to represent the ideal of Thai beauty.

“It’s not that she’s not pretty, but she’s only 168 centimeter tall. What could she possibly do on the stage of Miss Universe?” one Pantip user wrote, “It’s true that she can lose weight, but why bother when we had a better option to choose from?”

“That’s one fat pageant girl. How could she win?”

“I don’t wanna be mean, but look at her legs.”

Many of the netizens mocking Fai believe the 1st runner-up, Thai-American Pimbongkod “Ellie” Chankaew, should have won the title. Despite her poor Thai language skills, she was considered the biggest threat of the competition with 179-centimeter height and many pageant fans rooting for her.

One netizen switched the heads of Fai and Ellie and released the photo online/ Photo: Tom Pongkakorn

Displeasure at Fai’s victory has given rise to many memes and photoshop jobs, including one that postulates that this year’s winner of the Miss Tiffany’s transgender beauty pageant is more beautiful than Fai.

Not only has Fai been condemned for her appearance, the internet also dug up her past tweets and facebook statuses where she used foul language daily and called Red Shirts “dirty”.

“I’m not even going to talk about her body because it’s obvious, but her poor pageant walk and the language she used on social network have buried her alive,” Chuangwit, a hard-core pageant fan says, “If she was a normal teenager, nobody would care, but she’s a representative of Thai women. The girl should have known better and deleted all those statuses before entering the competition.”

It takes so much to be Miss Thailand!

In an interview with Morning News aired today, Fai said that despite the negative comments, she will try her best to win the international Miss Universe crown.

“I apologize to the pageant fans. I will take your comments into consideration,” Fai says, “I will do my best and improve myself.”

All in all, this year’s Miss Universe contest has been full of drama and scandals. Besides Ellie crying on stage for not winning, 2nd runner-up Sunannipar Kritsanasuwan’s past sexy photos have also been condemned online.
