Farmers threaten protest in Bangkok over rice-pledging scheme

Farmers have threatened to convoy en-mass to Bangkok if the government does not reverse its decision to cut Thailand’s controversial rice-pledging scheme within seven days.

Thai Farmers Association president Wichian Phuanglamchiak gave authorities seven days to reverse its decision to place the pledging price ceiling at THB12,000 per ton.

According to Wichian, several representatives of the association, as well as farmers hailing from another 22 provinces, will submit a letter to Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Tuesday, asking for reconsideration on the price cut. If the government ignores their plea, rice farmers from all over the country will travel on farm trucks to Bangkok to pressure the Government.

The Bangkok Post reports that the farmers’ lobby wants the government to continue buying rice at its original price ceiling of THB15,000  per ton.
