The famous Pu Noi Temple in Lopburi province generated over THB27 million of donations from its annual Buddhist festival on Sunday.
It reportedly took thirty volunteers several hours from Sunday night to Monday afternoon (with a break for a quick nap) to count all the donation money from the annual “Gathin Festival”, which was attended by thousands of people.
Gathin, or Kathina, is a Buddhist festival that marks the end of the rainy season. Worshippers go to their local temples to pray, make merit and offer robes to monks. The festival is usually held in October or November.
After the volunteers counted and separated the bills, five Krungthai Bank officials took over and counted the money electronically.
Finally at 7pm on Monday night, the operation to count the cost of faith ended. The temple had generated a total of THB27,098,290.
Phra Kru Prapat Thammatin, the temple’s abbot, said some Buddhists had donated as much as THB100,000 each. He thanked the donors for their generosity, Khaosod reported.
