The family of an eye doctor who was killed by a speeding cop while she crossed a Bangkok road filed a lawsuit yesterday seeking THB72 million (US$2.2 million) in damages from the Royal Thai Police.
Anirut Supawatjariyakul and Ratchanee Supawatjariyakul – the parents of Waraluck Supawatjariyakul – and their legal team named two defendants in their suit: the Royal Thai Police and Lance Cpl. Norawich Buadok, who was racing an unregistered Ducati motorcycle when he hit and killed Waraluck as she crossed Phaya Thai Road.
Anirut and Ratchanee are demanding THB72 million (US$2.2 million) in damages.
Anirut said that no price can be put on his daughter’s life, but the figure amounted to an “initial assessment” of her potential contributions to the country.
The Civil Court will consider whether to accept the lawsuit with a date set for April 20 for defendants to appear.
After this, Anirut and Ratchanee plan to sue the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and two of its agencies: the Traffic and Transportation Office and Road Safety Center – for negligence in road safety management. The family will demand the same amount as they are seeking from the police force and Norawich – THB72 million.
Waraluck died at the scene last month in front of the Bhumirajanagarinda Kidney Institute Hospital, while Norawich only suffered minor injuries. The Ducati Monster he was riding reportedly did not have mirrors or a license plate.
