Family phony’s hospital crime spree ends with arrest

Handbags, sunglasses and wallets. Also bank cards, car keys and mobile phones.

These items were among the loot stolen by a man police say took from patients and visitors at nearly 40 hospitals in Pathum Thani and nearby provinces. His method was simple: gain access by pretending to be a relative, then steal belongings from those who had fallen asleep.

Suriya Sermsin, 33 of the Lam Luk Ka district, told police he turned to crime because he couldn’t find work after being released from prison. And he didn’t need the cash only to support himself, but a network of girlfriends that required maintenance as well. He was busted after being spotted on security cameras at two hospitals.

Ever service-minded, the suspected criminal suggested, while being paraded to the media at a police press conference, that hospital visitors not trust strangers no matter how tidy and friendly they appear, Bangkok Post reported.
