Police don’t believe the story of Jomsap Saenmuengkot, the teacher who was jailed for a 2005 hit-and-run murder but recently released by a royal pardon. Jomsap is requesting a retrial to clear her name and says she has found the true criminal, a man named Sak Wapee, as well as a group of witnesses to verify her story. However, the police are calling these people accomplices to her lie.
Inspector Pol.Gen. Panya Mamen said yesterday that they have evidence that a scapegoat was hired to confess to the crime and make Jomsap look innocent.
As far as the police are concerned, it’s unclear why Jomsap, who spent a year-and-a-half in prison, has attempted to have her case re-tried. Pol. Gen. Panya said the police are investigating her motivation.
Pol. Gen. Panya said that after Jomsap was convicted in 2013, a group of seven people brought a man, who confessed to be the real culprit, to meet with Renu Nakorn police. That man was not Sak Wapee, who recently confessed to the crime and played a part in the re-opening of the case, Pol. Gen. Panya said without revealing further information.
Another suspicious part of the case is that the pick-up truck allegedly used in the hit-and-run accident does not have Sak’s name as the registrant at the time of the accident. He may have sold the truck in question a year earlier.
Pol.Gen. Panya said the police have gathered information on the seven accomplices and have interrogated the first man who was trying to take the charge in place of Jomsap. Police plan to prosecute the group soon and more information will be released to the public.
Meanwhile, Pol. Col. Kritsana Pattanachareom, Royal Thai Police spokesman, said they are considering suing the accomplices involved for defaming the Thai police, Thairath reported.
