The selfie is quickly becoming the latest research fad.
Apparently the way people pose, smile, flex and duck-face in selfies varies by region, and a data visualization which analyzed traits in thousands of selfies from around the world concluded Bangkokians are generally happy and young, while the men are flashy. We could have saved them a lot of time.
Those are some of the conclusions from a serious, professional study which quantified many characteristics of 640 from each of five cities, the results of which are available online at Selfiecity.
The data from the five cities – Bangkok, Berlin, Moscow, New York and Sao Paulo – reveal interesting observations to build a sort of composite self-portrait of a city’s people.
1. Bangkok is happy
The mood analysis reveals Bangkok selfies have the happiest expressions than selfies from anywhere else (0.68 average smile score). Meanwhile Moscow received the lowest ranking with only 0.53 on the smile score. Drink up, comrades.
2. Bangkok men take selfies almost as much as women
As we usually think of selfies as a chick thing, however Bangkok has the highest ratio of dudes, which account for 45 percent. Meanwhile only 18 percent of Muscovite men engage in selfie-pleasure.
3. Bangkok’s selfies are the youngest
When it comes to age, Bangkok also owns the youngest group of selfie takers with an average age of 21. New York’s self-setters are a crusty 25-years-old.
4. Bangkok women go modest, the men flashy
In the last aspect, Bangkok’s photos showed women strike the most conservative poses. This was measured by head tilt. The head-tilt analysis revealed most Bangkok women hold the camera in the position that does not expose their body, unlike other women from other cities. The babes from Brazil of course, strike the most provocative poses (Hello, bikini body!). On the other hand – or face – BKK men are the second flashiest and hold that camera to show their bodies. Again, second to Sao Paulo.
All in all, fun observations of the truth behind the eyes and postures of selfie takers can tell us that, although we might a little young and innocent, and many of our men like to show their stuff in the way they take selfies, we are quite happy about who we are.
