Like: Facebook opens Thailand office

Facebook, the world’s largest social network and Thailand’s national pastime, launched its first office in Thailand yesterday with a party at a riverside restaurant in Bangkok.

The actual location of their office remains hidden.

Dan Neary, Facebook’s Asia-Pacific Vice President, said the firm aims to strengthen its support for local businesses in the country (i.e. Facebook advertisers).

Interestingly, they also promoted online commerce functions, as you can see in the video below. Restaurant chain JQ Seafood is demonstrated as an example of a business where customers can book orders directly through Facebook.

Today we’re opening our first office in Thailand. Every month, 34 million Thais use Facebook to connect — and they post 3 times more than the global average. From local NGOs seeking donors to small businesses seeking customers, people across Thailand use Facebook to stay connected to the things that matter. Sureerat Sriphromkam is one of them. She owns a small business called JQ Seafood which delivers freshly cooked seafood to homes in Bangkok. She does everything through her Facebook Page – from talking to customers to filling orders. In less than four years, JQ Seafood has grown from 1 to 19 kitchens. Entrepreneurs like Sureerat are everywhere in Thailand – from the bustling street markets to the incredible malls – and we want to create more opportunities for them. We’re grateful for the chance to partner with businesses like JQ Seafood – and help more people in Thailand connect to the people and things they love.

Thailand currently has 37 million Facebook users per month and is the most Facebook-active country in Southeast Asia with an average person using Facebook for 2 hours and 35 minutes per day.

94 percent Thai users access Facebook through mobile phones and 70 percent contact with businesses via Facebook pages.

Facebook also announced it will fully roll out Instagram advertising to the Thai market on Sept. 30, enabling businesses to target its posts to specific audiences using data from Facebook. The service has already partially rolled out and you’ve probably seen ads from clients like Dtac and Lazada.

The press conference was held at the Jam Factory in Khlong San district. The location of the Facebook office was only said to be in Bangkok’s central business district while the company is still searching for a Thai country manager, The Nation and Marketing Oops reported.
