Facebook mulls ‘Sympathize’ button

Certainly two buttons can summarize the range of human feeling.

Giving a “like” to news about your friend’s dead pet or pictures of disaster victims might make you look like an inconsiderate jerk, so Facebook is considering a “sympathize” button as an alternative for negative statuses.

Facebook engineer Dan Muriello says the sympathetic option would be available only if the users specified they were feeling sad and gloomy, by selecting from Facebook’s emoticon options.

So if the function is ever implemented, you wouldn’t be able to ironically “sympathize” with your friends’ engagement or pregnancy announcements. How sad.

When asked about the much requested “dislike” button, Facebook reveals it would never happen. We guess users endless CAPSLOCK wars pretty much make that decision for them.

Muriello says Facebook is still waiting for the right time to launch the sympathize button, but many people are already excited about it, Cnet reported.

Until then, we say it’s perfectly okay to like a status about your friend’s breakup.
