Following revelations regarding his extravagant lifestyle, the Anti Money Laundering Office (AMLO) has frozen assets belonging to jet-setting monk Luang Pu Nen Kham Chattiko and his associates.
Luang Pu Nen Kham is the abbot of the Khantitham forest monastery in Kanthararom district of Si Sa Ket province. He is also known by the name Phra Wirapol Sukphol.
According to reports, Luang Pu Nen Kham and his associates have at least 16 bank accounts, 10 of which have daily monetary transactions of nearly THB200 million, said AMLO deputy secretary-general Suwanee Sawaengpol .
These fiscal perambulations have led authorities to suspect that the monk and his associates may be involved in money laundering operations. Now that their assets have been frozen, the monks cannot transfer funds or move any of their properties.
The Bangkok Post reports that AMLO will work with the Office of National Buddhism to pursue the case.
