Police today were investigating an early morning explosion that destroyed a street food shop in central Pattaya, injuring one.

Authorities rushed to the Je Ja Khao Man Gai restaurant on Central Pattaya Road, where an explosion had wrecked a two-story building and damaged others nearby.

Building owner Paisan Pongthawornpinyo, 56, said he was staying nearby when he heard what sounded like an explosion at about 5am.

Shards of glass were found scattered across the main road. A Laotian man identified only as Khith was found with severe injuries. Rescue workers performed first aid before transporting him to Pattaya Memorial Hospital.

Police suspect it could have been a gas explosion, but Paisan said the tanks in his restaurant were undamaged.
