Ex-police chief could face charges in Thailand

Police Lt. Gen. Kamronwit Thoopkrachang, currently under arrest in Japan, could face charges for smuggling a weapon out of Thailand.

If the former Bangkok police chief is found to have boarded his Thai Airways flight with a gun, he would be charged and could face up to two years in jail and a fine of THB80,000, according to Airports of Thailand Chairman Prasong Poontaneat.

The airport said yesterday data of its security scans of Kamronwit were erased. The screening system at Suvarnabhumi Airport only stores X-ray images for three days.

The airport authorities also said their security procedures meet international standards, but maybe just maybe somehow they couldn’t detect his gun and bullets.

Kamronwit was carrying a .22 Magnum Mini-Revolver manufactured by North American Arms.

Transport Minister Prajin Juntong offered his own reasons for how a man walked onto a plane with a gun, according to Bangkok Post. He said the systems were too old.

He argued the computer X-ray system at the airport was too old, and its software needed to be updated to cope with the most recent kinds of suspicious objects.

Ya’know, like a small handgun.
