Eight Thai universities mentioned in QS World Rankings, Chulalongkorn claims top spot

Eight Thai universities were mentioned in this year’s QS World University Rankings, with Chulalongkorn crowned the best university in Thailand for another year.

The prestigious ranking put Chulalongkorn at 252nd place, up one place from last year while Mahidol University took the 283rd spot and became the second best university in Thailand.

The other universities mentioned were Chiang Mai (551-600) and Thammasat University (601-650) while Kasetsart University, Khon Kaen University, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi and Prince of Songkla University were placed equally in the range of 701+1.

The six criteria used to organize the rankings are: academic reputation, employer reputation, student-to-faculty ratio, citations per faculty, and international student and international faculty ratio.

While the results are no surprise, Chulalongkorn has always been the toughest university in Thailand to enroll in, it is not even in the top 30 universities in Asia.

With hours wasted on cram schools and textbook memorization for the sake of passing the exam, the Thai education minister admitted last week that Thai students lack critical thinking skills and English language skills.

Regionally, National University of Singapore took the top spot, followed by Nanyang Technological University, also in Singapore, and Tsinghua University in China.

Meanwhile, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was ranked the world’s top university for the fifth consecutive year. Stanford came in the second spot, followed by Harvard, Cambridge, and Caltech.
