DSI to luxury car owners: ‘Keep your documents handy’

This whole story is really straining our catalog of luxury car stock photos

Yesterday, we cheekily suggested that the owners of luxury cars hide their ill-gotten gains, rather than face scrutiny by the Department of Special Investigations (DSI). Today, the DSI is taking a slightly different tack, warning those of you out there pushing a Lamborghini, Bentley or Ferrari to keep your documents on hand.

Following up on its weeklong sting on Thailand’s illegal car importers, the DSI has announced that it will soon mount inspections of some 488 luxury cars whose domestic prices stand at higher than THB4 million each. These inspections are intended to reveal further instances of import fraud.

The Nation reports that many of these cars belong to those high up in the police, military or political apparatus. When importing luxury automobiles, many of these officials have the cars equipped with engines that burn natural gas or liquefied petroleum, meaning that the vehicles can forego customary exhaust inspections.
