Facing your food at Bangkok’s Food//Hack

At the latest food//hack session from Raitong Organics Farm, food fanatics travelled to the headquarters of Energaia, deep in On Nut, to learn about the manufacture of spirulina. We learned all about this healthy and sustainable food source from experts who led us through its intricate production process. The best part was tasting spirulina in different dips such as cream cheese & herbs, and pesto. It was great to learn that such a healthy food product could be used in daily cooking.

Bryan Hugill, Co-founder and Hacknologist of Raitong Organics Farm, explains food//hack thus: “Food//hack@BKK, a new concept in the demystification of food in Bangkok, seeks to bring together elements of the cooking, DIYbio, soft/hardware hacking and P2P movements, with the intent of spawning collaborative innovation and understanding in the local culinary commons.”

He adds, “This really emerged from the thinking, though, that so few people we meet have a good understanding about food, what it means to eat, and where food comes from…which is bizarre, especially when we consider the fact that we eat every day, several times a day, and when food is so widely available in Bangkok at all hours of the day/night.

“The food//hacks are an opportunity for folks to come together and enjoy learning about food again in a relaxed environment of learning and sharing.”

Hugill says that future food hacks could touch on such topics as seaweeds, marine sustainability, bread making and the mysteries of Thai chili pastes. Check in on Raitong Organic Farms’ Facebook page for announcements of future hacks.
