The driver of a double-decker tour bus died after rear-ending a stopped tanker truck in the western metro area this morning in an accident that injured at least 26 passengers.

The driver was transporting 32 staff and faculty from Maha Sarakham Rajabhat University west to Kanchanaburi province when he slammed into the back of the truck, totally annihilating the front of the purple bus and killing him instantly.

The accident took place at about 5am in the Kamphaeng Saen district of Nakhon Pathom. Reports place the number of injured passengers at upward of 32.

A 68-year-old witness, Sombat Sookyu, told reporters that he saw the tanker truck stopped in the right lane and preparing to turn off just before the incident. At the same time, the tour bus was speeding toward it and reportedly did not brake before hitting the trick.

The casualties were taken to four nearby hospitals. Police are investigating the accident and plan to summon the truck’s driver and university staff for questioning.

They suspect negligence was to blame, which could lead to criminal charges.
