Dengue fever infections higher than the five-year average

In a warning to Bangkok residents about the spread of the disease, officials from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), said that this year had seen a marked increase in the number of people infected with dengue fever.

So far this year, 2,622 people within the BMA’s jurisdiction have been infected with dengue fever, one of which has died. This figures is greater than the five-year average for dengue infections, prompting BMA officials to issue a warning to citizens.

Dr. Wongwat Liulak, director of the Disease Control Division, prompted Bangkok residents to do away with standing water and scan their neighborhoods for other, possible mosquito breeding grounds.

Bangkok residents who come down with dengue fever are encouraged to call their local health office or the BMA hotline at 1555 in order to alert authorities and help contain the disease’s spread.
