A new type of theft has recently surfaced in busy areas across Bangkok. According to tales of this new specie of thievery, culprits no longer steal pedestrians’ mobile phones, but instead accuse their victims of breaking a phone already in their (the thieves’) possession.
Frequent BTS riders and people who travel to Victory Monument and Siam are warned to be especially wary of this new trick, as many have fallen victim to it over the past several days.
The gang perpetrating the scheme takes advantage of pedestrians by intentionally walking up to them, dropping their already-broken phone, ranting at a passerby as if he or she had caused the damage, and finally asking the passerby to offer money to repair the phone.
According to MThai, the gang remains on the loose and, apparently, no victims have yet filed official complaints with police.
