Have you ever walked from one end of Khao San Road to the other – only to find the soi terribly congested with overgrown vendors, food peddlers and foot traffic that your journey consumed 30 minutes?

With any luck this will soon change. Bangkok authorities have finally begun to crack down on the famously clogged soi. After, what must be years of complaints the backpacker capital will finally get breathing room.

According to the director of Bangkok’s Phra Nakorn Area, Chullanop Nuchanart, the road has become an unauthorized walking street. “Cars can’t travel on the road during the day, and the place is overwhelmed with people at night.” The law states that vendors are not allowed on a roadway from 6:00 to 22:00, however pavement is fine for selling goods.

Vendors have been warned and are aware that officials are launching a crackdown on violators. Offenders will face fines to the tune of THB2,000 per offense, reports Khaosod English
