Court ‘anarchy’ vandal handed suspended sentence

Justice proved swift but merciful for a young vandal who sprayed anarchy symbols outside a Bangkok courthouse.

Three days after Nattapol Kemngen vandalized the sign of the Criminal Court on Ratchada Road to protest a lack of justice for a slain friend, he was sentenced inside the same building yesterday to one year in jail with the sentence suspended.

The 22-year-old, who works for film studio Kantana Group, pleaded guilty to the charge and explained he did it because one of his mates in his punk-rock band was shot and killed by a soldier earlier this year, the investigation into which seemed stalled out.

Yesterday police announced they had enough evidence to prosecute the soldier for slaying Yuthana Sripradit.

While the police had charged Nattapol with damaging public property, the court filed contempt charges against him, according to Thai PBS.

After Nattapol confessed, the court considered his clean record and commuted its one-year sentence to a suspended jail term.
